Steel high pressure cylinders are manufactured in several ways: they can be cold-drawn from metal sheet, extrusion from hot steel billets (wide steel bars), or made from tubes. In the past, tube technology was the only method used. Forming the bottom and neck was the key to mastering the entire technology. The animated image below shows how laborious and complex this operation used to be. Below is a video of one of the ways in which the neck of a cylinder can be formed today.
